Moringa & Coconut Latte: A Healthy Coffee Alternative

P1020464-2.jpg

I have my own little morning rituals. This Moringa and coconut milk latte is now part of it. It’s a creamy and energetic drink great for people looking for a healthy (and delicious) coffee alternative, or those looking to try a new plant-based drink. I'm not a fan of caffeine, let alone cow's milk. And I must confess that having a herbal tea every morning can quickly become monotonous. This drink has officially become my new obsession, especially during these gray fall days.

Moringa (Moringa Oleifera), also called "The Miracle Tree", is one of my favorite wellness allies. I use it almost everyday in everything as it is beneficial for the health and well-being of the whole family. If you are not familiar with Moringa, here are some of its key benefits:

  • Moringa is one of the healthiest and most nutritious foods in the world. Rich in amino acids, essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamins A, B, C, calcium, magnesium, zinc and potassium. It is also an excellent source of iron, essential for preventing anemia.

  • Moringa leaves have a very high rate of chlorophyll, one of the most beneficial natural substances for boosting energy and improving health.

  • Moringa has anti-inflammatory properties and is particularly rich in antioxidants. These help to fight against the harmful effects of free radicals and thus prevent many diseases: cancer, cardiovascular disorders, infections ...

  • Consuming Moringa regularly helps strengthen the immune system, boost energy naturally without creating addiction, and prevent various diseases such as diabetes and cancer.

  • It helps reduce the risk of heart disease as it helps lower cholesterol levels in the blood.

  • Moringa is a safe food that children, adults, pregnant and breastfeeding women can consume it without undesirable side effects.

  • According to a study by the Asia Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention, 100 grams of Moringa dried leaves contain: 9 times more protein than yogurt, 10 times more vitamin A than carrots, 15 times more potassium than bananas , 17 times the calcium of the milk, 12 times the vitamin C than the oranges and 25 times the iron of the spinach.

  • It is a lactogenic food that stimulates the production of breast milk in breastfeeding women.

An energizing and delicious drink full of amazing health benefits, what else can one possibly ask for?

(For one serving)

Method:

  1. Combine the coconut milk and almonds in a saucepan. Add the Moringa powder.

  2. Simmer over medium heat, stirring regularly with a whisk.

  3. Once the milk has thickened and is hot, put the mixture in a blender. Add honey or maple syrup. Mix until a homogeneous texture is obtained.

  4. Pour into a cup and enjoy hot.

Notes:

  • You can replace almond milk with any vegetable milk of your choice. You can also omit it completely, but I think it brings a balance to the coconut milk that is quite fat.

  • You can replace the honey or maple syrup with dates, and put them in the blender in step 3.

  • To get the best of its health benefits, make sure to use a good quality Moringa powder. I make my own Moringa powder from dried organic Moringa leaves, but you can get Moringa from a health food store or online.
